Neutron's first launch slips to 2027

Rocket Lab found small air pockets between the carbon fiber layers of the forward dome on Neutron's first-stage propellant tank, which it traced to a newer automated fiber placement process. A replacement dome is in work. Next come void inspections, full first-stage assembly, then pressure and cryogenic testing, with the last step expected in the first quarter of 2027. Rocket Lab will set a new launch target after that. The rocket had been aiming for the fourth quarter of 2026.

SpaceX asks to fly Starship up to 456 times a year from Texas

The FAA has started an environmental review of a SpaceX request to raise Starship operations at Starbase to as many as 456 launches a year, up from the 25 allowed today. The agency plans a Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement with public scoping meetings. Starship has flown 14 times, all test flights from Starbase, and reached orbit for the first time on September 28, when it deployed 26 Starlink V3 satellites.

Christina Koch leaves the flight roster for NASA management

NASA named Artemis II mission specialist Christina Koch its acting deputy chief engineer, effective November 1. The move makes her a management astronaut, no longer eligible for spaceflight. Her crewmates have already stepped back too: commander Reid Wiseman and pilot Victor Glover became emeritus astronauts in September, so none of the Artemis II crew is in line for another flight as NASA prepares Artemis III for 2027.
